Text: Hosea 6:3

Memory Verse: “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

One thing the devil is so good at is reminding us about our ugly pasts. Thinking about the past produces two feelings. One is to feel guilty and retrace your steps. This particular feeling can produce repentance. The second feeling is to hunt you down. The major disadvantage of being hunted by your ugly pasts is that it weighs you down and makes you feel worthless. The implication here is that you are likely to feel that the door of God’s mercies, forgiveness, and blessings has been slammed against you. This second way of feeling is the one you must banish from your thoughts so that you will have the focus needed to face the future.

Apostle Paul uses today’s memory verse to outline what having a negative mindset can cost us in the search for eternity. He said he was focused on making the ultimate mark. But one thing that helped him was his ability to banish the thoughts about his ugly pasts and focusing on the things that laid ahead of him. (Philippians 3:12-14) He didn’t want the thoughts of those things he had done to weigh him down and make him feel there was no more hope for him. And it worked for him because, in the end, he finished well.

God is not interested in your ugly pasts. Rather, He is interested in your repentance today. He wants you to repent so that you can make heaven at the end of your life. The bible says, “He came to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) Are you among the lost by virtue of sin? God wants you to return. Forget about your past. Focus on that which is ahead. Are you hunted by the ghost of your past sins and wickedness and therefore feel that God will no longer forgive you? Repent and return to Him today, for He will forgive you because He is a merciful God. Are you hunted by the ghost of your previous years of failures, disappointments, disfavor, stagnancy, limitations, rising/falling, failure at the edge of breakthroughs, and so on? Forget about the past. Look unto God and He will help you, deliver you and bless you.

What is that important thing you have lost? There is no point dwelling on them. They belong to the dustbin of history. So you need to leave them behind and press on for something more worthwhile. Look forward. Aspire toward the mark to earn the ultimate prize, which is your eternity through Jesus Christ. Don’t let the devil hold you back with the lie that your sins are too grievous for God to forgive you and show you mercy. God insists that whosoever will call upon His name shall be saved. No exceptions.

Do not allow the devil to condemn you by constantly reminding you about your past. Look unto heaven for reconciliation with eternity on your mind and you shall be saved!

Worship/praise God and then take the following prayer points:

  1. Any power assigned to draw me back to my old ways; catch fire, in Jesus’ name.
  2. By the faithfulness in the spoken word of God, I order old things to pass away and all things are made new, in Jesus’ name.
  3. Father, I ask for enabling grace to press forward and look beyond my past, in Jesus’ name.
  4. O God, our Father, release upon our G.O and Mummy in the Lord greater grace and power to continue to capture more territories for the advancement of your kingdom, in Jesus’ name.
